For me, attending every drawing exhibition, which pretty rare lately, is a profound relief heartfelt. In painting, artist can throw a pail of color on an innocent canvas, leave it undone as if an abstractive art work has already achieved, then they get over rated from some, they gain popularity from viewers because of being edgy, dare and blur. Ok, the world potentially could be fooled, people who worship them doesn’t know whether they can draw or just lucky splashing color like kids. Does it matter? For me, damn yea. In this time of modern movement, some artist ‘wanna be’ will use this situation by abusing their lucky chance, stroking an emotion on canvas for the sake of being honest in the name of art, and claiming the new wave has born. Not that easy, kids. We know how twisted and horribly cripple Pablo Picasso and Francis Bacon works are, but because we know, too, that their drawing skill is unquestionable, we will let them fooling around with no question, happily.
J.A. Pramuhendra, "Devided & Fold", dimension: 200x400cm, charcoal on canvas.
Fine shading and the dimensionality of the objects are established with subtle gradations of tone. His work displays an excellent shading technique.
I like the emotion of this work. Created by Nyoman Erawan. Unfortunately I lost the detail of this one, but for sure, it's pretty big, almost 4 meters wide.
Sunaryo, "Introspection", dimension: 150x110cm, charcoal on canvas.
I can catch the tense, pupil that scared, the finger print that send the feeling of crime and investigation.
Hilman Hemdarsah, "Listen: We Make This Under License For Human Markets", dimension: 110x500cm, drawing pen and pencil on canvas.
He has enormous control over every lines he created, lines drawn closely at the same angle. The vigorous sense of tough and dangerous nature is emphasized by constant and precise direction of the pen lines
Indonesia Contemporary Drawing, Galeri Nasional Indonesia, June 16-24 2009
That's why we need to know further about the artist' skill. So we could and would give them total appreciation of their hard work, effort, and fantasies. By drawing for example, they can show they skill. Drawing is the most immediate and accessible forms of artistic expression. Whatever the nature or medium of an artist’s works, drawing invariably lies at the heart of it.
So, just yesterday, I went to Galeri Nasional Museum Jakarta, spent my 1 hour or so seeing the Indonesia Contemporary Drawing (participated by 53 artists), I surrounded my self with pencil and charcoal party. I stood still in front of chic 2x4 meters charcoal on canvas of JA Pramuhendra (title: Devided and Fold), observed 5 meters wide pencil and drawing pen on canvas of Hilman Hemdarsyah. I could feel their patient and hard work, appreciated them for all they were worth. This event held by Andi’s Gallery.
